About Me

My name is Alicia Braker and I am currently enrolled in my last year at the University of Central Florida. Road Map of Goals and Ambitions will lay out for you what I have accomplished at work and school and what I plan on accomplishing in the next 2 years.

Current Employment

For the past year I have been employed as a clerk at the Law offices of N. Diane Holmes P.A. It is a small two attorney family law office, but the information I have learned their is invaluable. I believe that this job will better prepare me for the profession and further education that I plan on. One of the greatest things that I have learned working at a small office, is the power of team work. In an office, if either yourself or someone else does not complete the tasks that are assigned the whole team/office suffers. More importantly, you have to go into work with a positive attitude since your feelings can easily effect the offices overall moral.

Below are a list of tasks that my job description requires:
- Schedule office appointments
- Screen potential clients: this is done by completing a set of new caller notes. When someone with a legal issue calls the office for the first time, information is obtained and evaluated to see if our office will be able to be of service. Either the notes are passed to the attorney or then are referred to someone else. This happens to be my favorite part of the job since this is really the only time I get to interact with clients on a personal level. You are not the same to every person on the phone, so are very skeptic about giving any type of information while others are extremely emotion. Therefore I must be sensitive to the person on the other end.
- In charge of putting consult packets together: which clients bring home pertinent information to their situation.
- Organize discovery: which is obtained by either our client or the opposing party. This information gives us knowledge on peoples finances, health, jobs, etc. depending on the type of case.
- Input Financial Affidavit: this documents either parties assets and liabilities.
- BE A TEAM PLAYER: by making sure that not only my job is done, but also seeing what others around the office need after my work is completed.

My Future

My Jounrey to Today

When I began the application process of college, I wasn't ready and didn't take it serious. Once I left home and got to college, I looked at it as a freedom zone. No parents reminding me of my responsibilities, making me go to class, or checking up on me. I didn't take it serious and my grades showed that.

...THE CHANGING POINT...

Once I started UCF I felt as if I had a purpose. My major was something which I loved and I wanted to prove everyone wrong, that I really could be a great student. I remember my first meeting with my adviser she looked at my grades and then at me and almost laughed when I told her my future goal was to go to law school. I left that day not only feeling discouraged but also determined. I spend more time at the library and less time going out. I went to class and by the end of the semester I learned one of the most valuable lessons that I have learned up until this point of my life. That everything I do no matter how small, insignificant, boring or tedious, to do it to the best of my ability. Because EVERYTHING I do is a DIRECT reflection of me, and the kind of person that I am. My grades have suffered because of my first two college years, and I have worked extremely hard to bring my GPA up to a level I can be proud of. I have managed to make straight A's, with the exception of one B in my first semester at UCF. Although it will be difficult to be competitive in law school because of my GPA, I have learned so much about myself in the process that it was well worth it. I have taught myself structure, discipline and most importantly to take pride in everything I do.
